~ How to Commission a Painting ~

  • If you would like to commission an oil painting of your pet, all you need to do is send me some clear, high resolution photographs either by email or post (see below for tips on photographing your pet for a painting). It is important to have a good quality photograph so that I am able to see the detail in the animal's features and therefore acheive the best results.
  • If there is a particular animal that you would like me to paint, but you don't have a photograph, then I can provide the reference material free of charge as I have access to an extensive image reference library. In this case, once you have given me an idea of the painting you would like, I will then produce a few small sketches to base the final painting on and you can choose your favourite.
  • A 20% deposit is required before I start the painting and I would normally have the painting finished in 2-3 weeks. On completion of the painting, I will email you a photograph of it. Once you have seen this and are completely happy with it, then the rest of the payment can be made securely online by PayPal or UK customers can also send a cheque. I give an unconditional guarantee in that you are not obliged to buy the finished painting if you decide not to. You may also return it for any reason within 30 days for a full refund including the deposit and shipping costs.

Elephant Painting

BLES Elephant Sanctuary, Thailand - Original Oil on Canvas

Size 16" x 24"

This painting was commissioned by a family who visited the BLES Elephant Sanctuary and wanted a memento of their time there. Not long after completing the painting I received the following email from the founder of BLES, Katherine Connor:

Hi, I'm Katherine, the founder of BLES. You recently did a painting of some of my elephants and I just wanted to tell you personally how stunning it was. I loved all the detail and you captured their spirits perfectly. I have posted the painting on the BLES page, to share with the rest of my supporters - I hope that is ok?
Thanks,
Katherine and the elephants.

Scottish Wild Cat Painting

Scottish Wild Cat - Commission

Original Oil on Canvas - Size 16" x 20"

Pet Painting

Tilly & Cleo

Original Oil on Canvas - Size 12"x16"

Here is an example of a commission painted from reference photographs that I took myself. In order to get a great shot of each dog, I photographed them separately and brought them together in the same painting.

~ Tips For Photographing Your Pet For a Painting ~

A good quality photograph will enable me to acheive the best results.

  • If possible, photograph your pet outside (without flash) as this is natural lighting and will show their colours more accurately. However, avoid strong sunlight as this may make areas of the photo too bright or cast dark shadows. A bright but overcast day would be ideal.
  • If you're unable to photograph outside, try to photograph in an area that is well lit with natural light, such as near a window. Avoid using the flash or having indoor lights on.
  • Get to the same eye level as your pet. Avoid taking the photo either looking down or up at them, as this may result in an unflattering pose.
  • So I can see the detail of your pet's features, it is important to have a clear, high resolution photograph. If you have a zoom lens, all the better! If not, just try to get at a close distance whilst staying in focus. A nice shot of the head and shoulders would be ideal.
  • If you would like more than one animal in the painting, it is better to photograph them separately to get the best shot of each one. If possible, I would also need a photo showing the animals next to each other, purely so I can see the differences in size/height.

If you already have some suitable photographs of your pet then feel free to send me some. If, sadly, your pet has passed away and you're unsure as to whether the photographs that you do have are suitable, then you're more than welcome to send me them and I'll get back to you.
